Is it true that once you get a shih tzu clipped their hair never grows back soft?

My dog is awful at being groomed, I can't kep him still, he really goes for me when I try to go near him with a comb! And being a shih tzu this means he gets matted easily. He seems to always be biting the hair on his back by his tail and this mats especially bad.

My vet told me that if i get him clipped his hair will never grow back as soft as it is now. I don't want him to be all wirey, most times, a short cut is enough but some areas of mats are just too much to get out, so i think he will have to be clipped this time.

I've had three shih tzus. Two are still alive and getting shaved every summer. I shave them from April to September. By Christmas the hair is just as long and soft as it ever was. I save the undercoat from when I brush them and use it to knit with! I think the "wiry hair" story is an old wives tale!

not true..i have cut mine many times and it comes back the same softness as before it was cut....

if u put him on a very high counter or table when u try to groom him it might help and use baby shampoo when bathing him if u get him clipped it helps soften the hair

My dog's hair was fine. I had to shave him every couple of months, he had so much hair, and it was always soft and LOTS of it. I don't think your vet was accurate. Hope this helps!!!

There hair is the dest of all the dog breeds IMHO.

I have never had a dog hair in my food since I owned him. A Big plus in my book.

no thats not true. if you don't keep dog groomed it will get knoted up and you will have a miss on your hands .

not true. my shih tzu is groomed a couple times a year and he's still as soft as he was when he was a puppy.

you should get him groomed tho...i know that i can't groom my dog because he freaks...but trained groomers have methods and whatnot. better to bring him to someone who is trained.
