I don't know what to do whith my dog's hair. Opinions please?

My dog coat is long, almost to the ground, and it takes me about an hour for daily grooming discounting the baths days (which unfortunately are frequent because he's got fine silky coat with tendency to be greasy. I'm up for a career change and I need to study for some important exams, the first of which will be by the end of this year, and I'm finding myself with less grooming time or too tired to take care of a long coat. Besides, his skin suffers from the long blowdrying time. The dog is not deprived of attention because he's got my BF, but he knows nothing about grooming, lol.

Is it fair to take my dog for a shorter cut, so that the grooming is easier and we have more time to play instead of being combing and dematting?? or is it unfair to clip a beautiful coat in a maltese and make it a common dog???

I don't think my dog understands when people stop on the sidewalk to say he's cute, so do you think I should clip him and that's it.

I would say definately go with a shorter "look". It would be a bad parent that just let their dog's hair go and get all tangly and matted.

PLUS, isn't a good cut GOOD for hair every once in a while. I think you will be doing your dog quite a service to allow him to sport a short look for a while, especially in the summer months.

Dont get down on yourself for not having the time right now. Sounds like you have given this pup quite a bit of blood, sweat %26amp; tears. It wont make you a bad owner, just a temporarily busy one.

Who knows, maybe this look will turn out to be the best thing for both of you.

Plus there are many "stylish" cuts you could go for.

And last, as far as "common" goes, it sounds like this dog is anything but to YOU, and that's ALL that matters!

If you are unable to take care of the dogs long coat you should get it trimmed. When you have more time again you can let it grow out. It is better to have a short coat then to get a matted coat and have a painful brushing once a week.

Have him groomed shorter. Don't have him shaved, but you can go for a shorter cut.

I think a puppy cut is fine in situations like this. Many show breeders have their dogs in puppy clips when they are not being shown. (Dogs who are being shown have their hair rolled up in papers).

Giving your dog a more manageable style will not make him a "common dog". IMHO, you are overgrooming him as it is. I think that if you know you are going to have less time for gromming then you should get him groomed by a pro and/or go for a shorter cut.

I have groomed breeds that are supposed to have coat touching the ground, and shaved them to the skin per owner's request, and people still tell them how cute they are. I think it is much more humane to clip down a coat you can't properly care for than it is to let them grow that kind of coat and have it get matted and nasty because you don't have the time to groom it.

I'd clip the coat down to a manageable length. Yur dog will be fine, and just as cute.

Get the hair clipped. The dog will get over it and be much easier to take care of. Consider keeping the hair short, the dog will thank you for it. Unless you are showing the dog, keeping a long coat is unnecessary. Have it trimmed to 2" or so - it will still look cute.

Its only hair - it will grow back! If you don't have time for the proper grooming of a long coat, just have it cut and when your schedule allows for the extra time the longer coat takes, then grow it out again.

I say cut it off! I have a pomeranian that I have shaved...at first you can tell he's pissed and imbarrassed but after about a day you can tell he's so much happier. He's doesn't like that hair just as much as you don't like taking care of it.
