Problem with a professor's appearance and smell?

I have a professor right now who is beyond awful. Not only are his teaching skills atrocious, but his appearance is even worse. He smells, never combs his hair, it doesn閳ユ獩 look (or smell) like he ever brushes his teeth, his clothes have holes and stains (which get progressively worse over the week because he obviously doesn閳ユ獩 ever clean or change them) in them, his shoes are never tied, his fly is half unzipped, and if his shirt is ever tucked in, it is only a little bit, never all the way! It is so hard to concentrate in a class where you are thinking about how gross the teacher is instead of what he is talking about. His skills as an educator are bad enough alone! Is it really necessary for him to look like a hobo slob when he comes to teach university courses?

Anyway, I am writing a letter to the dean of students for his department regarding the matter, but how do I write this letter without just saying 閳ユ笁e is a smelly dirty fool who shouldn閳ユ獩 be teaching here閳? Any ideas? Thanks!

Start on a positive note..."I have greatly enjoyed my time at this institution and have learned a great deal from my experiences in the classroom..." Then, say something like "I am concerned about the professionalism of Dr./Mr. _____...he does not represent what I have come to expect from the educators at this institution." Do not attack the man...state the facts in a clear and concise manner. End with "Thank you for your consideration of this matter...I look forward to continuing my relationship with this institution and continuing to grow and learn..." You should name the institution instead of writing "this institution," fill in the gaps, and customize it as you see fit. Good fortune.

You are wasting your time writing a letter. Teachers are tenured. I would sit in the back of the class and deal with it. It's a good lesson for you to learn how to deal with a difficult situation where you have to basically give in. Sorry.

The professor is a representation of the school - his dirty and unkemp appearance make a poor reflection on the school on top of making the learning experience unpleasant for all who must come near him.

Write your letter in as business like manner as possible. Be careful not to use derisive terms if you can avoid it. Also be direct and to the point - and don't belabor details. Keep it short and simple.

Be sure to note that you would not be sending the letter at all if the professor himself did not create a class disruption.

like other people said, don't attack the guy but maturely state the problems you have. That his appearance and lack of hygiene isn't really appropriate for a university classroom setting. Also, see if you can get other students to write letters or sign yours, the more support you have, the more they will see its the professor who has a problem, not just one overly-annoyed student.

and about the tenure thing, yes some professors are on it but its not an immediate thing they get upon hire. last year a chem. prof. was fired at my university for telling my friend that her excuse for missing class "wasn't good enough" and wouldn't let her make up an exam. my friend's "excuse"? she was in the hospital having an emergency surgery, even had an authentic doctors note explaining it.
